How long does a lathe cut actually last?
A fair question, and one that comes with some real history behind it — dubplates used to mean fragile, limited-play acetate. Here's the honest picture for a modern PETG lathe cut, and how to get the most out of one.
It depends almost entirely on the material.
Traditional dubplates were cut to acetate — a lacquer-coated aluminium disc that's genuinely soft and wears with every play. That history is where a lot of the "dubplates don't last" reputation comes from, and for acetate, it's fair. See our guide to what a dubplate is for the full background.
Most one-off records cut today, including ours, use PETG rather than acetate. It's a harder, more stable thermoplastic that doesn't share acetate's wear curve. A PETG lathe cut played on a properly set up turntable with a decent stylus will hold up to regular, repeated use rather than a handful of careful plays. What actually affects how long it lasts.
Shortens its life
Worn or conical stylus — a damaged or basic tip adds wear with every play.
Incorrect tracking force — too light causes mistracking, too heavy adds unnecessary wear.
Dust and static — debris in the groove grinds against the record as it plays.
Heat exposure — direct sun or a hot room can warp PETG over time.
Flat, careless storage — stacking records flat can warp and stress the disc.
Extends its life
Line contact or Shibata stylus — traces the groove more accurately with less wear.
Correct tracking force and anti-skate — set to the deck and cartridge manufacturer's recommendation.
An anti-static brush before every play — keeps the groove clear of dust.
Vertical storage, out of direct heat — standard record storage practice applies.
An inner sleeve — keeps dust off the playing surface between plays.
Storing a lathe cut properly.
The same rules that apply to any vinyl record apply here, with one PETG-specific point worth knowing: store records vertically rather than flat, in an inner sleeve, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A stack of flat records puts uneven pressure on the ones underneath and can cause warping over time — vertical storage avoids that entirely.
The PETG-specific point is heat. Because it's a thermoplastic, a lathe cut is more heat-sensitive than a pressed PVC record. Left in a hot car or too close to a radiator, it can warp. Normal room-temperature indoor storage is fine and won't cause any issues — it's really only sustained heat exposure that's a concern.
Static and dust: PETG builds up static more readily than PVC, which attracts dust into the groove. A quick pass with an anti-static brush before each play is a small habit that noticeably reduces surface noise over time. See our full turntable setup guide for the rest of the playback fundamentals.
Is it wear, or something else?
Genuine wear builds up gradually across many, many plays and tends to affect the whole record fairly evenly. If something sounds off on a record that's barely been played, or a specific problem only shows up toward the end of a side, that's almost always a different issue — most commonly inner groove distortion, which is a physical property of how records are cut and played rather than a wear or durability problem, or a turntable setup issue like incorrect tracking force.
Worth ruling out before assuming a cut has worn out: try a different stylus if one's available, check tracking force and anti-skate are set correctly, and clean the stylus and record. If the issue persists across a clean setup and multiple plays, it's worth getting in touch.
