Behind the Cut — Article 6

What Does Vinyl Preparation Actually Mean?

When you order a cut from Diz Lathe Cuts, there is a standard cutting setup included with every order. There is also a separate vinyl preparation option. These are not the same thing. This article explains the difference.

What is included with every order

Standard cutting setup is part of every session regardless of whether vinyl preparation is purchased. It includes everything needed to operate the cutting chain safely and competently for a given programme. In practice this means:

  • Technical assessment of the supplied audio
  • Establishing the correct gain structure for the programme
  • Setting groove pitch and RPM for the specific project
  • Configuring the cutting chain for the material
  • Normal system-specific EQ and processing built into the cutting setup
  • Test cutting and verification of the result
  • Adjustments within the scope of normal cutting preparation

This is the engineering work involved in operating a precision cutting lathe. It is not a separate service — it is simply what careful cutting involves. Every order gets this.

What vinyl preparation is

Vinyl preparation is corrective mastering work applied to source material that requires intervention to become reliably cuttable. It is a separate service because it involves separate work — the work of a mastering engineer assessing and adapting the audio to work within the constraints of the vinyl format.

Preparation might include some or all of the following, depending on what the audio needs:

  • De-essing or high-frequency management for sibilant or abrasive content
  • Low-frequency mono crossover to address problematic stereo bass
  • Sub bass management to control excessive groove excursion
  • Phase correction for out-of-phase or problematic stereo information
  • Channel balance correction for significant imbalances
  • Dynamic management for material with very aggressive limiting
  • Transient management for difficult percussive content
  • Coherence work across different sides of a record so they behave as a consistent whole
  • Level optimisation for the specific format, RPM and side length

Preservation of artistic intention. Preparation work at Diz Lathe Cuts aims to make the audio suitable for the format while keeping the character of the original recording intact where possible. The goal is a reliable, good-sounding vinyl record — not a different-sounding one. Significant changes to the audio are discussed with the customer before being applied.

When preparation is recommended

Vinyl preparation is the right choice when:

  • The audio has not been specifically prepared for vinyl cutting by a mastering engineer
  • You are working from a standard digital master or streaming-optimised master
  • You have concerns about any of the issues described in Audio That Can Be Difficult to Cut to Vinyl
  • The recording contains particularly demanding programme material — heavy bass, sibilant vocals, fast percussion, aggressive limiting
  • You want the assessment to happen before cutting, not during it
  • You would prefer not to be asked for a revised master mid-project

Preparation is optional. If you have a vinyl-specific master from a mastering engineer who has prepared it with vinyl in mind, you may not need it. If you are supplying a standard digital master and declining preparation, you are taking responsibility for the suitability of the audio as supplied.

What preparation does not include

Vinyl preparation is frequency and dynamics shaping to make a file as cuttable as the source allows. It is not a full mastering service, and it does not guarantee a specific cutting level or loudness. At £35 per order it covers the engineering work of optimising the file for the format — not rebuilding a compromised recording.

If the source has fundamental quality problems — a poor original recording, heavy distortion baked into the signal, irreparable artefacts, or programme material that simply cannot track reliably at a competitive level regardless of processing — preparation may still be unable to achieve a full-level cut. The engineering time is charged for. The outcome is limited by the source material.

When this situation arises, it will be communicated clearly before the session concludes. Options will include proceeding at a reduced level with agreement, requesting better source material, or a frank discussion about realistic expectations. Cutting a compromised record without disclosing it is not the approach here.

Vinyl preparation at Diz Lathe Cuts covers the engineering work of preparing audio for the format. It does not turn a poor source into a great one.

The commercial position

When vinyl preparation is not purchased and the supplied audio turns out to require corrective mastering work to cut reliably, that corrective work is not automatically included in the original cutting price. Standard cutting preparation is included. Corrective mastering of unsuitable source material is not.

If physical testing reveals that the supplied audio cannot be cut and tracked reliably without significant intervention, production will be paused and the situation explained. Options will be discussed. The goal is always a good record — not a contractual dispute. But the boundary exists for clarity, and it is worth understanding before ordering.
