How independent labels use lathe cut vinyl for promo copies, limited editions, catalogue runs and test pressings — without pressing plant minimums, lead times or upfront tooling costs.
When lathe cutting makes sense for a label
Pressing plants are the right tool for large runs. For everything smaller, lathe cutting offers something a pressing plant can’t: immediate, flexible manufacturing with no minimum order commitment.
- Promo runs. 10–25 copies of a release for press, radio and key contacts before or alongside a larger pressing. Lathe cuts play on any turntable and sound like vinyl.
- Limited editions. Numbered editions of 10–100 copies for fans, merchandise or collector releases. The format works well for artist-run labels with an existing audience.
- Catalogue releases. Older material that doesn’t justify a full pressing run but still has demand from existing listeners or collectors.
- Pre-orders or crowdfunded releases. Cut to the quantity you’ve actually sold, not to a pressing plant’s minimum order.
- Test pressing alternative. Hear your master on vinyl before committing to a pressing plant run. A 1–3 copy cut costs a fraction of a formal test pressing and the feedback is real.
Practical economics
Flat-band pricing means every record in your order pays the same rate within a quantity band. There’s no graduated calculation — a 20-copy run pays 20 × the 16–30 rate.

The economics work differently from pressing. Per-unit cost is higher than a pressed record at equivalent volume — but there are no setup costs, no minimum order commitments, no 6-month lead times and no stock to carry. For a 25-copy limited run, total cost of ownership is usually lower than pressing.
Audio and mastering
Labels working with a dedicated mastering engineer should ask for a vinyl master specifically — not just a louder or quieter version of the streaming master. A vinyl master accounts for groove excursion, stereo low-frequency content, sibilance management and appropriate headroom. This produces a better-sounding cut and may not require additional preparation.
Standard digital masters, streaming exports and anything not specifically prepared for vinyl cutting usually require vinyl preparation (£35 per order) before cutting can proceed. This covers technical adjustments to make the file cut cleanly — it’s not full mastering.
Vinyl preparation is not mastering. If your master isn’t ready for vinyl, prep will help it cut cleanly — but it won’t fix fundamental mix or mastering problems. The better the source, the better the cut. See why a digital master isn’t always a vinyl master.
Packaging options for a label run
Printed centre labels are available at +£1.50 per record — supply your artwork at 86mm (7″/10″) or 96mm (12″) and Diz prints and applies them. Artwork inserts (front/back cards, not traditional outer jackets) at +£2.00 per record. Poly outer sleeves at +£1.00 per record.
Externally printed outer jackets are not produced in-house, but can be discussed for runs of 25+ copies through external print partners. Email before ordering if this is part of your release plan.
Timeline and workflow
Production is approximately 2–3 weeks from payment and receipt of all final, approved audio and artwork. Diz Lathe Cuts operates Tuesday to Friday.
For a label release, the workflow typically looks like this:
- Submit the order request with format, quantity and what you’re supplying.
- Receive a quote confirmation with any questions about the audio.
- Supply final mastered audio and any artwork files.
- Pay the invoice — this locks in your production slot.
- Cutting, labelling and packaging over the production period.
- Shipped to you when complete.
